This Saturday, January 3, Mel Gibson celebrates his birthday. The opportunity to delve back into his filmography.

Mel Gibson celebrates his 70th birthday. He was born in the American town of Peekskill on January 3, 1956. He made his debut in Australia under the camera of George Miller in 1979 with “Mad Max”. A role by Max Rockatansky, obtained by the greatest chance. The young aspiring actor, then aged 23, accompanied his friend Steve Bisley to an audition. His appearance, marked by a fight the day before, did not fail to attract the attention of casting directors. A cult saga where he reprises his role twice: in 1981 and 1985.

This penchant for franchises continued with “Lethal Weapon” on four parts, from 1987 to 1998. For almost ten years, he became inseparable from his partner, Danny Glover.

In parallel with this cult saga, he played several times under the camera of Richard Donner and notably in “Maverick” alongside Jodie Foster in 1994. A collaboration with the director which continued with the thriller “Plots” where he starred opposite Julia Roberts.

A talented director

The 1990s are also synonymous with Mel Gibson’s first steps as a director. The public’s attention will be focused on “Braveheart”, released in cinemas in 1995. At the heart of the cast is a masterful Sophie Marceau in the skin of the sovereign Isabelle of France. A feature film widely praised by critics since it received five statuettes at the Oscars including that of best film and best direction. A renewed success at the box office with “The Passion of the Christ” whose revenue reaches more than $600,000,000 in all four corners of the globe.

For almost five decades, he has brilliantly multiplied the different registers. Thus, he goes from romantic comedy with “What Women Want” to science fiction with “Signs” via war film with “We Were Soldiers”.
