One of the best films of recent years is available on Netflix, but you’ve probably never heard of it!

Many “best movies” lists highlight Netflix original productions with all-star casts. Meanwhile, this Taiwanese family drama has largely flown under the radar – and remains a hidden gem, even five years after its release.

Netflix has proven, more than once, that in addition to being the streaming giant, it also knows how to shine at the main film festivals. Titles such as The Irishman, Marriage Story, The Chicago 7, Attack of the Dogs, Don’t Look Up, Maestro, Emilia Pérez and, of course, his most recent production, Frankenstein, have accumulated nominations and awards at the Oscars and at festivals around the world.

Whether with original productions or acquired films, Netflix has shown that its catalog has a lot to offer. And this one is one of the best dramas of 2020 available on the platform. The fact that A Sun hasn’t made it onto the charts is likely due to the low-key release of director Mong-Hong Chung’s film, which premiered in 2020.

Even among critics, A Sun was underestimated for a long time – until Peter Debruge, from Varietycalled it the “best film of 2020″… in 2024. Despite the praise, the film did not achieve great visibility on Netflix even after years, remaining a true hidden gem.
