In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Ruben Fleischer explained that, although he considered turning the death into a trick, he decided to keep the outcome real. “We thought about it, but it seemed like it would take away the weight of the story. Morgan felt it was the right thing to do, so I wouldn’t have done it any differently if he didn’t agree,” he said.

The filmmaker also commented that the decision was made to give more emotion and relevance to the story. “It was difficult, but it was what the film needed to have real risk. He’s such a beloved actor that if the villain Veronika really eliminates him, the impact is huge. The prison scene between Woody Harrelson and Rosamund Pike only exists because we made that choice,” said Fleischer.

Morgan Freeman completely supported the idea and thrilled the entire team during filming. “You don’t go into a Master’s Trick expecting someone to die. It was challenging, but Morgan was totally on board and brought so much emotion that I cried watching the scene,” recalled the director.
