James Cameron debunks Matt Damon’s anecdote about his role in Avatar and the 10% profit
It was in 2009 when Avatar hit movie theaters and since then the anecdote has become well known that Matt Damon was very close to starring in James Cameron’s film. To add even more drama to the matter, the actor confessed that the director offered him 10% of the box office, but finally Sam Worthington
However, despite having spoken about this matter in the past, Cameron has now revealed the truth in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, noting that the reality is “somewhat different.”
“He was never offered the role. I don’t remember if I sent him the script or not. I think not? Then we ended up on a call and he said, ‘I’d love to explore the possibility of making a movie with you. I respect you a lot as a filmmaker.’ (Avatar) sounds intriguing.
But I really have to do this Jason Bourne movie. I have committed to it, it is a direct conflict and therefore, unfortunately, I have to reject it.’ But it was never offered. There was never an agreement. We never talk about the character. We never reached that level. It was simply an availability issue.
What he has done now is extrapolate his phrase ‘I get 10 percent of the revenue from all my films.’ And if, in his mind, that’s what it would have taken for him to do Avatarthen it wouldn’t have happened. Trust me on that. So you are free of guilt and you don’t have to punish yourself anymore. Matt, it’s okay, buddy! “You didn’t miss anything.”

However, the creative recognizes that he has a lot of respect for Damon and believes that he is deeply honored that he had put his commitment to the saga of Bourne to a hypothetical hit on the big screen.
“He felt obligated to call me personally to tell me; he said he didn’t want it to come from his agent; he’s an honorable guy. All my respect to Matt. I’d love to work with him one day. But that never happened. It was a blur of different things going on.”
Maybe in the future there will be a role waiting for the performer on Pandora, but that will have to wait until at least Avatar 4. And God knows when it will be released.
