every time an actor in the saga has undergone a recast

The Harry Potter film franchise represents one of the most impressive and recognizable undertakings in the history of modern cinema, capable of accompanying an entire generation of spectators for over ten years. Over the course of the long saga, however, there has been no shortage of casting changes, often due to production needs, growth of the actors or changes due to the story.

Among the most discreet cases there is Alicia Spinnet’smember of the Gryffindor Quidditch team, and in the first chapters she was played by Leilah Sutherland, but already from The Chamber of Secrets the role passed to Rochelle Douglasa change made less evident by the progressive downsizing of Quidditch matches in subsequent films, increasingly focused on the return of Voldemort.

Similar situation for Ernie MacMillana Hufflepuff student initially made memorable by Louis Doyle, who appeared in Chamber of Secrets and The Goblet of Fire. When the saga reached its conclusion with The Deathly Hallows, the character briefly reappeared played by Jamie Marks, now relegated to a supporting presence during the Battle of Hogwarts.

Also Mafalda Hopkirk underwent a significant change, in the film Order of the Phoenix it was just a stern voice coming from a screamer, played by Jessica Hynes. With The Deathly Hallows – Part 1, the character took on a physical form during the infiltration of the Ministry of Magic, entrusted to Sophie Thompson, who returned the anxiety and nervousness required by the scene.

Elphias Dogea member of the Order of the Phoenix, initially appeared in a short sequence with the face of Peter Cartwright. Later, when the story required more depth into Dumbledore’s past, the role passed to David Ryall, whose more intense and melancholy performance contributed to enriching the revelation of the headmaster’s dark sides.

One particularly noticeable recast concerns Hermione Granger’s parents, dfter an almost fleeting first appearance in The Chamber of Secrets, played by Tom Knight and Heather Bleasdale, Mr and Mrs Granger re-emerged ten years later in The Deathly Hallows – Part 1 with Ian Kelly and Michelle Fairley. The latter, in particular, managed to convey the full weight of the scene in which Hermione erases herself from their memory.

The case of Katie Bell highlights the change in tone of the saga, in fact in the first films she was played by Emily Dale, with a marginal role. In The Half-Blood Prince, however, the character becomes central because of the cursed necklaceand is entrusted to Georgina Leonidas, called to support one of the most distressing sequences of the entire series.

Angelina Johnson instead went to Danielle Taborpresent in the first chapters, to Tiana Benjamin for The Goblet of Fire, where the character acquired greater visibility thanks to the Yule Ball. However, scheduling issues prevented Benjamin from returning in the final films, leaving the character’s journey incomplete on screen.

The Patil twins represent another emblematic example. Padma Patilinitially played by Sharon Sandhu, changed face with Afshan Azad starting from The Goblet of Fire, then maintaining the same casting until the end. Parvati Patil, however, passed from Sitara Shah to Shefali Chowdhury, who accompanied Harry to the Yule Ball and remained in the saga until the Battle of Hogwarts.

Bill Weasley is one of the most curious recasts: initially visible only in a photograph played by Richard Fish, he was then physically embodied by Domhnall Gleeson in The Deathly Hallows, also creating a curious real parallel with his father Brendan Gleeson, interpreter of Mad-Eye Moody.

The Gray Lady, from a simple ethereal presence played by Nina Young in the first film, she became a crucial character in the saga’s finale. For this reason, The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 entrusted the role to Kelly Macdonald, who gave her a crucial depth for the resolution of the plot.

Pansy Parkinson probably holds the record for changes of interpreter: over the course of the films she was played by four different actresses, up to the definitive version of Scarlett Byrne, who made her open hostility towards Harry during the final battle memorable.

Also Aberforth Silente underwent a change: initially appearing as a simple innkeeper at the Hog’s Head, played by Jim McManus, he was then revealed as Albus’ brother, taking on the face of Ciarán Hinds, called to give emotional depth to one of the most tragic tales of the Dumbledore family.

Tom the innkeeper at the Magic Cauldronor is it perhaps the most visually obvious recast. From an ordinary figure played by Derek Deadman in the first film, he became a grotesque caricature with Jim Tavaré in The Prisoner of Azkaban, symbolically marking the change of tone of the entire saga.

The Fat Lady it passed from Elizabeth Spriggs to Dawn French, who made a more eccentric and theatrical version of it, perfectly in line with the more surreal atmosphere introduced by Alfonso Cuarón.

Also Ounces-Ounces saw a change in casting: after a first appearance divided between physical interpretation and dubbing, Warwick Davis he took on both roles in the final films, making the character more consistent.

The case of Lavanda Brown remains one of the most discussed: from a background student initially played by black actresses, she suddenly became a central character with Jessie Cave in The Half-Blood Prince, raising controversy over the change in representation.

Tom Riddlefinally, it changed its face for age reasons, in fact Christian Coulson gave way to Frank Dillane when history required a more adult and disturbing version of the young Voldemort. The most important and painful recast, however, remains that of Albus Dumbledore. After the death of Richard Harris, Michael Gambon took up the legacy of the character, reinterpreting him in a more energetic and tormented key, a choice that divided fans but which coherently accompanied the increasingly dark evolution of the saga.
