Doomsday’ Directors Break Silence on Chris Evans Returning as Steve Rogers
The first teaser trailer for Avengers: Doomsday officially hit theaters last week with Avatar: Fire and Ashbut Marvel Studios has finally released it online. The footage features Chris Evans making his grand entrance as Steve Rogers in the MCU event film directed by the Russo brothers, who have now broken their silence about the original Avenger’s return.
In a new Instagram post, Anthony and Joe Russo posted the following caption along with the first teaser for Avengers: Doomsday: “The character that changed our lives. The story that brought us all here together. It was always going to come back to this…” Though some fans are still unsure if it is the right decision, it seems the Russos believe his return was inevitable as a direct result of the events of Avengers: Endgame. Evans joins a star-studded cast also led by MCU icons Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom and Chris Hemsworth as Thor. Check out the post below.
In the teaser, Evans is seen returning to his countryside home, pulling out his Avengers: Endgame suit. He also holds up a baby, presumably his child with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). It seems like Doomsday will pull him back into action while living his life in the alternate timeline, forced to rejoin the fight as Doctor Doom is intent on destroying the multiverse as it currently exists. It is thematically similar to the second teaser, which features Thor praying to Odin to go back to his child, Love, after his impending battle against Doom.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Is Banking on Nostalgia With Early Marketing
Though Avengers: Doomsday is a culmination of the past five years of development in the MCU, it seems the Russo brothers are concerned with following up on the storyline from 2019’s Endgame. At the very least, banking on the popularity of icons like Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. to get general audiences back in seats once the film hits theaters in 2026. The franchise has not been the moneymaker in recent memory as it once was, but Marvel Studios looks to rebound in a major way next year. It is currently rumored that the next two teasers will revolve around Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom and potentially James Marsden as Cyclops, whose X-Men team joins forces with the Avengers and Fantastic Four in the film.
The Avengers: Doomsday cast features Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm / Invisible Woman, Anthony Mackie as Captain America, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Letitia Wright as Shuri / Black Panther, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Wyatt Russell as John Walker / U.S. Agent, Tenoch Huerta Mejía as Namor, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm / Thing, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Lewis Pullman as Sentry, Danny Ramirez as Falcon, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm / Human Torch, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Winston Duke as M’Baku, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, James Marsden as Cyclops, Channing Tatum as Gambit, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards / Mister Fantastic, and Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.
