“Avatar: Fire and Ash” brings together 1.8 million spectators in five days
Metronome regularity! “Avatar: Of Fire and Ashes” by James Cameron recorded 1.79 million admissions in France between the day of its release, last Wednesday, and Sunday evening. This is as much as the first opus in December 2009 and barely less than the second, “Avatar: The Way of Water” in December 2022 (which attracted 1.84 million spectators over its first five days of operation).
The blockbuster therefore has, logically, the best start of the year in French cinemas… Ahead of another Disney film, “Zootopia 2”, which attracted 1.59 million spectators during its first five days in cinemas at the end of November. Already on Wednesday, “Avatar: of Fire and Ashes” had the best first day of operation of the year 2025, with 273,370 entries on the clock.
Disappointing figures in the United States
In the United States, on the other hand, the third opus of the saga got off to a “disappointing” start – despite stratospheric figures. The feature film, in which the natives of the planet Pandora must face attacks from humans but also from another clan of natives, was released on Friday. It grossed $88 million in its first weekend. A score higher than that of the first “Avatar” ($77 million), but well below that of “Avatar: The Way of Water” ($134 million). On a global scale, the third part of James Cameron’s saga has already grossed $345 million, marking the second best start of the year, just behind “Zootopia 2”.
How far will this third “Avatar” go? The first and second installments respectively occupy first and third place for the biggest global box office hits of all time (“Avengers: Endgame” comes in second place). In France, they ended their run at 14.7 and 14 million admissions. According to experts, it is still impossible to say whether “Avatar: Fire and Ash” will match its predecessors, but it will most certainly finish above 10 million admissions… Very good news for cinemas, which had a difficult year in 2025.
