Ari Aster’s new film has low box office forecast

According to box office projections, the new film by Ari Aster with the A24, Eddington, should suffer at the box office in the United States. Projections indicate that the film should make US$5 million during its release weekend.

The film’s budget is not known, but speculation on the website World of Reel, the film must have been in the range of US$ 40 – 60 million dollars. This would be Ari Aster’s second failure with A24, as in 2023, Beau’s Afraid it also did not have a box office that covered the budget costs.

All about Eddington

In addition to Joaquin Phoenix in one of the main roles (repeating the duo with the director seen in Beau Tem fear) and Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us) like me rival, the cast still has Emma Stone (Poor Breeders) Luke Grimes (Yellowstone), Austin Butler (Dune: Part 2), Deirdre O’Connell (To Drift), Micheal Ward (Empire of Light) and Clifton Collins Jr. (The Bricklayer).

The story of Eddington takes place during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and follows what happens in the small town in Texas (USA) that gives the film its name when the current mayor, Ted Garcia (Pascal), seeking re-election, comes into conflict with anti-mask sheriff Joe Cross (Phoenix), who is also running for mayor. The two different visions of dealing with the virus divide the locals.

Aster directs the film as an acid comedy and a modern western, covering issues that were controversial in 2020 and continue to be present in modern life, such as protests, internet conspiracy theories and more. The film had a divided reception at Cannes, receiving one of the worst scores from the Screen critical jury, but finding its defenders, such as Omelet.

In our review, William Jacobs defended Eddington like a comedy where every laugh is a bad vibe. He said: “Purposefully exhaustive, Eddington deserves points for not trying to parody post-2020 life through it all. Much is said about how cultural products like GTA and Saturday Night Live struggle to get the same laughs as their exaggerated versions of modernity, since something as unbelievable as their jokes can be found on CNN news. Aware of this, Aster even satirizes, but does not turn any of his characters into caricatures, preferring to just hold up a mirror to almost everything that the algorithms on our smartphones serve us in the morning. The result will be equally exhausting for defenders and worshipers of Eddington, as there is no way to approach all of this without exhausting our emotional reserves.” Read our full Eddington review here.
