A false existentialism or why it is so difficult to successfully adapt ‘The Stranger’ by Albert Camus
The most famous beginnings of novels are those that seem to concentrate the overall experience of subsequent reading, or the reasons why said novel It’s so canonical. In the case of The foreigner the Albert Camuspublished in Nazi-occupied France in 1942, both things are true. “Mom died today. Or maybe yesterday. I don’t know.””. Meursault, the protagonist, will describe his thoughts in first person throughout the novel, surprising us with his dryness and distance in the face of undoubtedly dramatic situations. Having a mother die is tremendous. And even more so if you didn’t have a particularly bad relationship with her, like Meursault.
