a badass teaser that plays pirates with Karl Urban on Amazon

After first images, Amazon reveals The Bluff by Frank E. Flowers through a first teaser… and soon a trailer.

When you think about it, it’s quite strange that Hollywood doesn’t produce pirate films more often. In addition to having been a huge commercial success (in 5 feature films, more than 4.5 billion dollars in revenue for cumulative budgets estimated between 1.2 and 1.4 billion), the saga Pirates of the Caribbean popularized the figure of the bandit for several generations. Perhaps this anomaly can be explained by technical difficulties, notably the size of filming at sea. A number of projects have failed there (cf. Waterworld) and the solutions, notably those found by Gore Verbinski and his teams, were costly.

The BluffAmazon’s upcoming pirate film produced by brothers Joe and Anthony Russo, may have found a very simple solution: bring its buccaneers to land. The film will feature an ex-pirate who takes refuge in the Cayman Islands (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) with her family, when her former Captain (Karl Urban) resurfaces to take revenge on her. Will the story take place far from the depths, as its pitch and the first photos recently revealed suggested? New elements of response in the teaser, broadcast by Prime Video.

SOFT SAND SAILORS

As this teaser shows, the adventure seems to take the form of a land confrontation rather than a maritime one. We could even say that, looking at these 15 seconds (admittedly, it’s meager enough to get a precise idea), The Bluff seeks less to exalt this scent of travel and adventure which has made works like Pirates of the Caribbean or Master and Commanderthan to make a John Wick with cutlasses and muskets.

And that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The certainly omnipresent fashion for all-out fighting films is as good as any in the world of Hollywood entertainment. And the time and geography of the story of The Bluff will perhaps give the subgenre a facelift. Like a Battle Royale arena, we hope that the island which houses the action will be teeming with dark caves, heavenly beaches, tropical forests with impressive fauna, in short, will be a prestigious setting for the fight scenes and conducive to staging tricks.

Above all, perhaps the choreographies will be renewed by the genre. It is hard to imagine the bloodthirsty buccaneers showing, like John Wick, skills extensive in Asian martial arts. And the saber clashes were one of the great successes of Verbinski’s trilogy (the first duel in the forge, a masterpiece of its kind). So, a The Raid with a fighting style adapted to the historical era covered, it could be tempting.

The Bluff will he really go in this interesting direction? Before knowing for certain when it is released on February 25 on Prime Videowe will already know more on Wednesday January 14, 2026, the date on which a trailer for the film is announced.
