Streaming Today: Jason Statham Wanted $11 Million for This Action Blockbuster – and Was Replaced by a Game of Thrones Star
Statham is considered one of the biggest action stars of our time, but that wasn’t always the case. Everything changed thanks to this film, whose future was penalized by greed.
Jason Statham was already part of the British diving team, worked as a model and even ventured into the fake market – until he was finally discovered in the 90s by director Guy Ritchie. Today, most people probably know him as a tough guy who delivers merciless slaps and one-liners to his adversaries, and a significant part of that is due to Explosive Payload.
The action thriller attracted many fans and won some sequels, but one of them didn’t turn out as expected. The plan to make Legacy with Statham failed due to the star’s salary demands – which asked for an exorbitant sum of eleven million dollars!
Too expensive for EuropaCorpwhich ended up continuing without the actor.
What happened to the future of Explosive Payload?
With Ed Skrein in the lead role, the film grossed a respectable $72 million on a budget of $22 million. On the other hand, it was massacred by critics and disappointed Statham fans – which is why the franchise has been considered dead ever since.
Initially, it was reported that Skrein had even left Game of Thrones to participate in the film. However, the Londoner later clarified that his departure from the HBO series had other reasons. In any case, both his physical attributes and his presence on stage certainly differentiate him from the version of the character played by Statham.
Frank Martinplayed by Skrein, also works as a driver in the criminal underworld – until he meets Anna (Loan Chabanol). a mysterious femme fatale forces him to change his life, but before Frank knows it, he not only has to worry about his old boss, but also face a ruthless gang of human traffickers…
Explosive Charge – The Legacy is on Telecine (via Globoplay or Prime Video).
