Hideo Kojima is in Zootopia 2 and you probably didn’t notice

Hideo Kojima, creator of Death Stranding and Metal Gear, is known for loving cameos — his games are full of them — but now the developer is making a cameo in a very unexpected place: an animated Disney film.

According to Mantaweb via Automaton, Kojima will appear in Zootopia 2 as a mole in the Zootopia Police Department. Police officer Paul Moledebrandt — to use his full name — will be the director’s first cameo in an animated film and will appear through a direct invitation from film director and CCO of Walt Disney Animation Studios, Jared Bush.

“I have done many cameos in live-action films and games, but this is my first experience as a voice actor in a theatrical animated film,” said Kojima. “And it’s from Disney, to boot! Plus, it’s the sequel to my favorite movie, Zootopia! To top it off, I received an offer directly from director Jared Bush, so I was extremely honored and accepted without hesitation.”

In the Western version of Zootopia 2, Agent Paul Moledebrandt is voiced by Josh Gad. The film is already a huge success, with a global box office opening of US$556 million. US$156 million was grossed domestically during the Thanksgiving holiday (five-day period), but it was internationally that Zootopia 2 soared, with an impressive US$400 million (China was responsible for more than half of that amount).

Overall, Zootopia 2 has the fourth highest global box office of all time, behind only the MCU films Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War and Spider-Man: No Way Home. Zootopia 2 now looks certain to become a billion-dollar movie in theaters.
