5 Brazilian comedy films to liven up your weekend

Increasingly popular, Brazilian cinema has always been very plural, but if there is one genre that never loses space and lives in the spotlight, it is comedy, mainly because we have such iconic talents as Ingrid Guimarães, Selton Mello, the late Paulo Gustavo (1978-2021), who left behind the learning that laughing is a revolutionary act.

Perrengue Fashion (2025) – Prime Video

Paula Pratta (Ingrid Guimarães) is a fashion influencer who sees her career take off with a Mother’s Day campaign alongside her son, Cadu (Filipe Bragança). But his world begins to fall apart when he drops out of college to live in the Amazon. The blogger then embarks on an adventure full of troubles, for which she was not at all prepared, with the intention of bringing him back. The journey, however, makes her question values, such as luxurious living or sustainable living, in addition to her own role as a mother and professional influencer.

My Mother Is A Piece (2013) – Netflix and Globoplay

This comedy with Paulo Gustavo narrates the life of Dona Hermínia, played by himself and based on his own mother. Divorced, overprotective and outspoken, Hermínia loses her way when her children grow up and leave home, leaving the “nest” empty. She then starts doing everything she can to be as present as possible in her children’s lives, even though they themselves try to outwit her. The film has two more sequels.

From Legs to Air (2010) – Netflix

Another comedy starring Ingrid Guimarães, De Pernas pro Ar follows Alice, a workaholic woman who sees her love and family life fall apart after her husband, tired of losing her work, takes a break from the relationship. While trying to get himself together, he ends up forming an unexpected partnership with his neighbor, Marcela (Maria Paula), owner of a sex shop. During her time alone, Alice also discovers the pleasures and success in the field of erotic products. The film has two more sequels.

O Auto da Compadecida (2000) – Globoplay

In this classic of Brazilian comedy, northeasterners João Grilo (Matheus Nachtergaele) and Chicó (Selton Melo) mix cunning and trickery to survive the blows and challenges of the backlands, in addition to escaping the clutches of the cangaço. After a huge mess from which they were unable to escape, everyone involved ends up dying and ends up facing divine judgment. There, Our Lady, the Compadecida (Fernanda Montenegro) intercedes for them. The film has a sequel.

Very Calm At This Time (2010) – Mercado Play and Prime Video

With a strong cast, Muita Calma Nessa Hora revolves around friends Tita (Andréia Horta), Mari (Gianne Albertoni) and Aninha (Fernanda Souza), who, when faced with decisive moments in their love and professional lives, decide to spend a weekend in Búzios to forget their problems and relax a little. On the way, they meet Estrela (Débora Lamm), a young woman who is searching for her father. Together, they experience new experiences, romances and discoveries amidst lots of fun and drinking. The film has a sequel.
